Restorations / Herstellingen

Restorations is a monthly reflection of Latter-day spirituality by Bryan Monte, a member of the Community of Christ, living in Zeist, The Netherlands, and Robert Poort, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, living in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Community of Christ is the new name of the former Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both churches find their origin within the faith tradition of the Restoration.

Herstellingen is een maandelijks bericht over spiritualiteit in het licht van het herstelde evangelie door Robert Poort, een Nederlander woonachtig te Las Vegas in de VS, en lid van de Kerk van Jezus Christus van de Heiligen der Laatste Dagen, en Bryan Monte, een Amerikaan woonachtig te Zeist, en lid van de Gemeenschap van Christus. De Gemeenschap van Christus is de nieuwe naam van de voormalige Gereorganiseerde Kerk van Jezus Christus van de Heiligen der Laatste Dagen. Beide kerkgenootschappen komen voort uit de geloofstraditie van de Herstelling.

The San Francisco Congregation / De Gemeente in San Francisco

On a beautiful Sunday morning, on March 16th 2008, I decided to visit the COC San Francisco congregation, which is only a 15 minute drive away from my daughter's house. Located in the beautiful Forest Hill and Sunset Park area, on the corner of Taraval and Funston Street, I found the address I had looked up online, but besides a big Presbyterian church, I did not notice another church building at the intersection. As it turned out, and after making a phonecall, the COC ownes a private residence at 275 Taraval, which is the location where the members of the Community of Christ in the 'city at the bay' congregate. I went up the stairs to the first floor and was warmly welcomed by Kevin Watkins who resides at the same address. While he was getting ready, he invited me to have a look around: the main room serves as a small chapel, an arrangement not unlike some LDS congregations in The Netherlands. No podium here, but a circle of chairs surrounding a small sacrament table and an electronic organ in the back. To further accentuate the religious surroundings I noticed some traditional paintings of Christ and in the center on a shelf above the fire place a small statue depicting a child, peacefully accompanied by a lion and a lamb. I had seen this favorite COC scene before, but once again realized what a beautiful and powerful image it really is.

Just the day before my wife and I visited the LDS Oakland Temple accross the bay where I noticed a similar scene: a statue in front of the temple of a boy and a girl with their dog, and with an accompanying text from III Nephi:17 in the Book of Mormon:

 21 And when he had said these words, he wept and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them.   22 And when he had done this he wept again;   23 And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.   24 And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.

Such is of course the essence of the gospel: children of heavenly parents at peace with each other and in harmony with creation, and I was struck by this coincidence. Not only beautiful imagery, but especially meaningful in San Francisco where tolerance, peace (and flower power!) are trade marks. Saint Francis, of course, was not a Latter-day saint but a Catholic saint who taught simplicity and unity with nature!

As simple as this home-based San Francisco house of prayer may seem to first time visitors, the place radiates spirituality, its simplicity fits the surroundings. A small room in the back has a small library in which I sat down for 15 minutes or so. I noticed titles as The Book of Mormon testifies, The Book of Mormon speaks for itself, and eight volumes of The History of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I was fascinated by a beautiful picture book dedicated to the COC Temple at Independence, Missouri. I had only seen pictures of the exterior of this magnificent temple, but I found myself marvelling at the beauty of the interior as well and at first glance noticed many fascinating symbols that can be found there.
Whereas we as 'cousins' within the Restoration family do a pretty good job in ignoring each other, one cannot help but smile about the fact that in many ways for all of us "all roads lead to Independence", and when the Lord returns there he will hopefully find a people united in love! Later that morning I heard somebody jokingly use the expression: "taboo after Nauvoo!", and that he remembered that folks used to stress to others that they were "RLDS-not Mormons"! We all had a good laugh, but at the same time realized that there is much work to be done.

Jesus said: " Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them." Matthew 18:20;
so with six in attendence that morning we qualified!
I was pleased to find out that some in the room had met Bryan Monte in the past and someone even mentioned Wim van Klinken, a well known name in the Community of Christ in The Netherlands, now residing in Kansas City.
The one and a half hour service included the singing of Easter hymns; from the hymn-book RLDS-Hymns of the Saints, in which I noticed a few familiar hymns like for example: We thank Thee O God for a Prophet. Within the small group the personal well-being of each in attendance was given attention, as well as that of those members of the congregation not present due to illness. Andy Shelton, Outreach Minister of the COC in Novato, California, reported on recent activities and church developments. I noticed familiar terminology like Stakes and Mission Districts, Apostles, Stake Presidents and Seventies. If I understood correctly, within the COC there is a shift from the traditional "leadership style" to a more local proces of decision making and implementation. Discussed was also the need for support for neighboring small COC communities. A young couple in the room announced they were to be married soon in the Independence Temple; he was a lifelong COC member, she was a native of Brasil and raised LDS.
I found myself thinking: how fitting to witness an LDS-COC engagement; may their love be true and eternal!

As I walked to my car that morning I felt enriched and inspired by my brothers and
sisters of the restoration, not a stranger at all, but a fellow citizen.
From Taraval Street one has a beautiful view of the magnificent Pacific Ocean to the west, perhaps a reminder of the visionary outlook the restoration has to offer?


De Gemeente in San Francisco

Op 'n prachtige zondagmorgen op 16 maart 2008, besloot ik de San Francisco- gemeente van de Gemeenschap van Christus eens te bezoeken, slechts zo'n 15 min. rijden van de woning van mijn dochter. De kerkelijke gemeente ligt in de mooie wijk Forest Hill-Sunset park, op de hoek van Taraval en Funston straat. Ik had het adres op het Internet opgezocht, maar behalve een grote Presbyteriaanse kerk was er geen andere kerk te vinden. Achteraf, en na het plegen van een telefoontje, bleek dat de Gemeenschap van Christus (COC) op het adres Taraval straat 275 een privewoning in eigendom heeft waar haar leden in deze stad samenkomen. Ik liep de trap op naar boven en werd hartelijk welkom geheten door Kevin Watkins die zelf op dit adres woont. Terwijl hij met voorbereidingen voor de dienst bezig was, nodigde hij me uit om rustig rond te kijken; de woonkamer was als kapelruimte ingericht, niet ongewoon voor kleinere gemeenten van de kerk in Nederland. Er was geen podium, maar in plaats daarvan waren stoelen om een kleine avondmaalstafel geplaatst en er stond een elektronisch orgel achter in het vertrek. Dat het een religieuze ruimte betrof bleek ook uit schilderijen aan de muur met bekende afbeeldingen van Christus en op de schoorsteenmantel zag ik een standbeeldje van een kind, vredig omringd door een leeuw en een lam.

Ik had die typische COC afbeelding al eerder gezien, maar realiseerde me deze keer nog eens wat een prachige en veelzeggende afbeelding dat eigenlijk is.
De dag ervoor bezocht ik samen met mijn vrouw de HLD Oakland Temple aan de andere kant van de baai, waar ik een soortgelijk tafreel tegenkwam: een beeld dat voor de tempel staat van een jongen en een meisje en hun hond, met daarbij de volgende tekst uit het Boek van Mormon:

21. En toen Hij deze woorden had gezegd, weende Hij, en de schare gaf er getuigenis van; en Hij nam hun kinderen één voor één, en zegende hen, en bad voor hen tot de Vader. 22. En toen Hij dit had gedaan, weende Hij wederom; 23. En Hij sprak tot de schare, en zeide tot hen: Ziet uw kleinen. 24. En toen zij opblikten, richtten zij hun ogen ten hemel en zagen zij de hemelen zich openen, en engelen als in vuur uit de hemel nederdalen; en zij kwamen neder en omringden die kleinen, en zij waren met vuur omgeven; en de engelen dienden hen.
(III Nephi 17:21-24)

Dit is zo'n beetje de essentie van het herstelde evangelie: kinderen van hemelse ouders die in vrede met elkaar en in harmonie met de schepping leven; heel toevallig maar ook heel bijzonder dat ik beide prachtige afbeeldingen tegen kwam in San Francisco waar verdraagzaamheid, vrede (en 'flowerpower') nu eenmaal in het vaandel staan. De heilige Franciscus was dan wel een katholieke heilige, geen heilige der laatste dagen, maar hij stond voor eenvoud en eenheid met de natuur!

Dit gebedshuis in San Francisco ademt spiritualiteit, haar eenvoud past wat dat betreft in de omgeving. Een achterkamertje was als biblioteek ingericht waar ik zo'n 15 min. mocht rondsnuffelen. Ik zag er boeken met opdrukken als: The Book of Mormon testifies, en: The Book of Mormon speaks for itself, en acht delen van The History of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ik zag er een prachtig geillustreerd boek liggen over the Independence-Missouri Tempel van de Gemeenschap van Christus, waarvan ik al eerder afbeeldingen had gezien, maar zag nu heel mooie foto's van het interieur en de vele symbolen die er te vinden zijn. .
Als leden van de herstellingsfamilie leven we meestal langs elkaar heen, maar ik moest ongewild glimlachen over de omstandigheid dat voor ons allen "alle wegen naar Independence" leiden; hopelijk treft de Heer er bij zijn wederkomst een éénsgezind volk aan! Later die ochtend hoorde ik iemand als grapje de uitdrukking "taboe na Nauvoo" gebruiken en dezelfde persoon herinnerde zich dat men zich plachtte te introduceren als "Gereorganiseerde Heiligen der Laatste Dagen-niét Mormonen"! Daar moesten we allemaal om lachen, maar realiseerden ons tegelijkertijd dat er nog heel wat werk aan de winkel is.

Jezus zei: "Waar twee of drie mensen in mijn naam samen zijn, ben ik in hun midden." ( Matteus 18:20);
en met zes mensen in de kamer voldeden we dus aan de voorwaarde!
Het was leuk te horen dat men Bryan Monte kende, en ook wist men dat Wim van Klinken, een bekende naam in de nederlandse COC kerkprovincie, naar Kansas City was verhuisd. De dienst duurde anderhalf uur, met inbegrip van de paasliederen die we zongen. In het zangboek trof ik mij bekende liederen aan: o.a. Wij danken U Heer voor Profeten. Binnen de kleine groep aanwezigen werd naar ieders welzijn geinformeerd, maar ook naar dat van degenen die wegens ziekte niet aanwezig konden zijn. Andy Shelton, een zendeling van de COC uit Novato in Californie, deed verslag over recentelijke aktiviteiten en kerkelijke ontwikkelingen. Ik hoorde uitdrukkingen als Ringen en Zendings Districten, Apostelen, Ringpresidenten en Zeventigers. Als ik het goed begrepen heb, is er binnen het COC een verschuiving van "leiderschapstijl" naar een proces van besluitvorming en het toepassen van regelgeving op meer plaatselijk niveau. Er werd ook gesproken over het belang om andere kleine COC gemeenten in de omgeving te ondersteunen. Een jong paar in het vertrek kondigde aan dat zij voornemens waren binnenkort te trouwen in de tempel in Indepencence; hij was al zijn leven lang lid van de Gemeenschap van Christus (COC), zij was Braziliaanse en van oorsprong HLD.
Ik dacht bij mezelf: wat een heel toepasselijke COC-HLD verloving; ik wens ze oprechte en eeuwige liefde toe!

Toen ik na afloop terugliep naar mijn auto, voelde ik me gesterkt en geinspireerd door mijn broeders en zusters van de herstelling, niet een vreemdeling, maar een medeburger.
Vanaf de Taraval straat heb je naar het westen een prachtig uitzicht over de Grote Oceaan; misschien een verwijzing naar het visionaire panorama van de herstelling?
